(PDF Download) Surveillance Report #98, Apparent per Capita Alcohol Consumption: National, State, and Regional Trends, 1977-2012

A recent presentation of data from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) showcases America’s extensive history of alcoholic consumption—dating back to the 1850s. While the report highlights many interesting trends in alcohol consumption throughout American history, addiction recovery center Chapters Capistrano notes that information for the past few decades should strike concern among the public.
While highly specific, the NIAAA report reveals a general upward trend in alcohol consumption—a trend that could indicate greater rates of alcoholism in America. Specifically, the NIAAA found “[in] the United States, per capita consumption of ethanol from all alcoholic beverages combined in 2012 was 2.33 gallons, representing a 2.2 percent increase from 2.28 gallons in 2011.”
